ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Albany State University will help met the growing demand for social workers by offering a new degree.

Starting this fall, the school will offer a Master of Social Work Degree.

Program leaders say it will help south Georgia social workers earn an advanced degree close to home and will mean better service for vulnerable children and families.

"Hopefully we'll have about 20 to 30 students this fall. DEFACS in Dougherty County has asked us to specifically work with them and getting some of their social workers into this program," Dr. Marilyn Spearman, ASU Dept. of Behavioral Sciences.

This is only the sixth such program in the University System of Georgia.

It will have six full-time staffers, and the University hopes to earn accreditation for the program soon.
