DOUGLAS, GA (WALB) – There's a shocking number of unsolved murder cases in one south Georgia county. The GBI has 19 open homicide investigations in Coffee County.

The most recent crime happened just a few months ago and the oldest case goes back several decades, but agents are still looking for clues in all of them and they hope you can help.

For a GBI agent, an unsolved homicide is a book that never closes. In fact, it just keeps getting thicker as leads come in.

In the same time period as these 19 unsolved homicides, there have been 139 death investigations. "That sheds light on the magnitude of death cases we do work," said Asst. Special Agent in Charge Scott Whitley.

Most recently agents are looking for clues in the death of Sandra Robinson at the pre-paid wireless Superstore March of this year.

A highly publicized case GBI agents are still working on is the death of Doris Spiller Worrell, who was shot and killed at Jon's Sport Park

Two unsolved murder cases from 2003 that GBI agents believe are linked involve the murders of five men, who shot in the Oak Park Community.

GBI agents are still looking into two unsolved cases from 1998, the murders of John McKinnon and the stabbing of 20 year old Christy Meyers.

The oldest case, is the death of Mattie Robinson, found behind an abandoned house in 1974.

"There are some where the evidence exists and we know if we had the right name of the person who did it would be solved and we would be able to make an arrest and there are some where they are cold mysteries as far as the identity of the killer," said Whitley.

Agents say they periodically go back over the files on every one of those cases.

Agents are also actively searching for Altamease Sallete who went missing in June of 2001. She was 37 when she went missing and her vehicle was discovered near the Coffee Atkinson Line, but she disappeared without a trace.

If you have any information on these homicides call the GBI office at 912-389-4103.

  • After the murder of Rosie Gaskins in nearby Pearson in March, Ginger Paulk created a Facebook page for women's self defense, called: 'Women Who Aren't Afraid to Use Guns and Baseball Bats.' If you're on Facebook, you can link to it here...   There is a story on this site that lists the names of those murders that remain unsolved.
