ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Georgia falls into the top ten states in the nation for identity theft.

But many took the steps on Saturday to make sure they're not a victim.

A community Shred-A-thon was held at Heritage Bank so people could bring all of their confidential documents to be shredded for free.

Organizers say it's important to safeguard personal information before trashing it. Georgia ranks 7th when it comes to identity theft.

"People don't realize that dumpster diving is the oldest method of identity theft and it's still the most popular, people go through your trash pull your personal information and they have everything they need to use your credit," said Heather Nichols, Heritage Bank Marketing Coordinator.

HeritageBank of the South , WALB and ShredEX partnered to bring the FREE shred day for southwest Georgia.

At the last event more than 10,500 pounds of paper was shredded.
