ALBANY, GA (WALB) – The sound of symphony music boomed from the Albany Civic Center, but the audience was a bit different than you might expect to see.
Almost five thousand third, fourth and fifth graders from Dougherty and Lee County Schools were at the Civic Center Friday morning to see the Albany Symphony Orchestra perform two shows.
The students accompanied the symphony as they played.
The shows were part of a program designed by the Carnegie Library called Link Up, which has a goal of expanding musical education.
For the orchestra, the show is about more than just a chance to reach a new potential audience.
"We are just hoping to keep the music alive. Because it's so important for children to be so well rounded. And that gives them the opportunity to experience playing an instrument, seeing a symphony orchestra play," said Paula Fay, the Executive Director of the Albany Symphony Orchestra.
Fay says that Albany is the only city in Georgia that is hosting a Link Up event. They are looking to expand the event to add even more schools next year.
