JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - There's a State of Emergency in the City of Jackson due to the winter storm.

Mayor Harvey Johnson wants his crews and everyone else to be prepared.

Public works crews have been staging on streets and bridges since early Thursday. They're ready to apply melting product on the snow and ice.

If you're at home, and you feel vulnerable Thursday night, the Jackson Fire Department is conducting wellness checks. Call the Mayor's Action Line at 601-960-1111 if you need assistance at home.

The mayor also asks citizens to stay off the streets when the snow starts to fall.

"The type of weather we're expecting can cause automobile accidents. We need to stay off the streets so the fire department and police department can respond appropriately to those calls," he said.

The Hinds County Emergency Operations Center can be reached at 601-960-1476 or 601-968-6771.  Contact them for hazardous weather conditions that need attention in the county.
