What a relief to see a dilapidated downtown Albany building finally come down.
Last month, the city finally tore down one of its own; a rundown apartment building on Odom Street. Progress, yes - but there's still much more work to be done.
Eyesores have long been recognized as a deterrent to growth and development, and Albany certainly has its share. They're not only unsightly, but they are often havens for drug users and vagrants.
It's not uncommon for them to catch fire when vagrants light fires inside to try to stay warm; and that poses a threat to surrounding homes and businesses.
So we applaud the city of Albany for taking down its own eyesore, and we encourage code enforcement officers to continue to press forward in making Albany the beautiful city it once was.
