Viewpoint: Lock up those guns

More of you are buying guns to protect your homes and families. We all know that's a right guaranteed by the Constitution.

We hope all these new gun owners also fully understand the responsibility that comes with that right.

One gun dealer told us he's been selling a lot of guns like the Bushmaster Carbon 15 lately.

It's an assault-type pistol that holds 100 rounds of ammunition. Unless you expect to be attacked by a small army, is that really the kind of protection you need?

Even if you think it is, you need to protect the weapon. It's not the kind of gun you want in the hands of criminals, but more guns are ending up with crooks.

Law enforcers tell us home burglaries are up, and many of the burglars are stealing guns.

If you own a gun, it's your responsibility to make sure you know how to use it safely. And it's your responsibility to make sure it doesn't end up in the wrong hands.

Otherwise, you're not protecting yourself. You're just putting the rest of us in danger.
