Valdosta - A stalled housing project at Moody Air Force Base may soon be finished.
Congressman Jack Kingston confirms Wednesday that the Air Force signed a letter of intent with a new contractor to finish work on the Moody Family Housing project.
US Senator Johnny Isakson says he expects a contract to be finalized by the end of the month.
That's good news for dozens of area sub-contractors who are still owed millions of dollars for their work.
American Eagle, owned by the Carabetta Group, was hired to construct 600 new homes for the airmen stationed at Moody Air Force Base.
Work came to a halt a year ago when American Eagle stopped paying. The houses have been rotting behind locked gates ever since.
"This was a situation that got out of hand. American Eagle is a contractor on five other instillations where there were some problems. The Air Force needed to stay on top of it! It should not have gone as far as it did. It's very unfortunate what's happened. Hopefully we are going to be able to rectify It. But I know this has caused some pain," Senator Isakson says.
They hope as soon as the contract is finalized they can begin the process of getting all debt paid.
