Publix coming to Tifton

Folks in Tifton will soon have a new place to buy their groceries and apply for a job because a Publix is coming to town.

Destruction and cleanup is what you'll see right off of I-75 in Tifton for a little while. A new Publix grocery store is coming to the corner of Virginia Avenue and 8th street. They were first told this construction would not happen. But, Tifton Mayor Jamie Cater made a call to Publix's regional office.

"At the end of the conversation, he said 'well Mr. Mayor, you're going to have a Publix in your town' and so that was very pleasing," said Cater. "Then the economy hit. They never wavered. And today was a very special day for Tifton, Georgia."

And the people of Tifton are glad to have new shopping opportunities on the way.

"We've shopped at Publix when we're at the beach or something in Florida," said lifelong Tifton resident Hannah Jones. "I know there's a few around in Georgia. But, we're very excited to have one in our hometown."

The mayor says Tifton has a lot to offer businesses and it is ready to grow.

"We're the hub of South Georgia," said Mayor Cater. "We've got Interstate 75, Corridor Z, which is 82, 319, 41, 125. We have all those roads intersect right here in Tifton. It's time. We hope to have some growing pains here in the future."

He says the new Publix will give the mall area a nice facelift.

Publix already has stores in Albany, Lee County, and Thomasville. The Tifton store is scheduled to open in less than a year.
