Cook Co. inmate escapes in stolen truck

ADEL (WALB) - A Cook County inmate who escaped this afternoon in a stolen truck could be heading to Florida, authorities say.

Barry Schaal was on work detail at the county road department when officials say he stole an employee's 2002 white Chevrolet Avalanche.

"Around 1:30, one of the inmates on work detail at the county barn we believe took one of the workers vehicles and left," said CCSO Investigator Brent Exum.

"What we've determined is the county inmate was unsupervised at the time. Either the county worker who was supervising him had left to go pick up another county worker. It seems he went into the parking lot got into the vehicle and left," Exum said.

Schaal had been in Cook County lockup since April. Ironically, he was in for the same crime that earned him his unwarranted freedom.

"He was stopped here for actually stealing a car. The Georgia State Patrol had actually arrested him for bringing stolen property into the state was the charge he was here for," Exum said.

A Florida native from the Tallahassee area, Schaal may be trying to get back home.

That stolen Avalanche has damage to the rear driver's side and the tailgate is down because the latch is broken.

It has a personalized Georgia License plate "Hannah D." If you see Schaal or the stolen truck call 911.
