VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -  College basketball teams are ready to hit the court at midnight across the country for their first practice of the season.Helfer is missing the start of preseason practice with a good reason.

Valdosta State will start practice without head coach Mike Helfer.

He is in his hometown of Newark Ohio where this weekend Mike Helfer is being inducted into the Newark Catholic High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Mike Helfer was not only a star baksetball player in high school.

He was a standout receiver on two state championship teams in football.

Helfer played basketball in college which led to his coaching career.

This weekend, he is looking forward to sharing this moment with his family and the coaches who made a big impact on his accomplishments as coach.

Mike Helfer said. "I learned from some great coaches at a young age. Guys that just taught us how to work hard to accomplish a common goal. That has kind of stuck with me my entire career. It has always been out the team and not me the individual."

Mike Helfer is already the third winningest coach in VSU basketball history.

The VSU basketball team opens their season on November 12th against Puerto-Rico Mayaguez in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
