Turner Co. airport expansion raises controversy

Posted: Updated:
TURNER CO., GA (WALB) -

A controversial Turner County airport expansion project is underway.

The airport was built in the late 1960's, but the short runway has always posed a problem.

Say the Governor wants to visit Turner County.

He has to fly into Tifton.

The project would expand the runway from 32-hundred feet to about 5-thousand feet.

Some residents are opposed to the expansion because they do not want to have to use Federal money.

"It is a controversy only because we do not know the answer, we know the answer to how much the airport will cost us in the long run, but we don't know is what it will cost us not to do it, and those are things you cant answer on development, I happen to believe that it is a positive thing," says Mike Geoghagan, Turner County Commissioner.

Leaders say two businesses have already expressed interest in coming to Turner County if the runway is expanded.
