'Courageous' sells tickets

A movie shot and set in Albany is one of the most popular in the country.

Sherwood Baptist Church leaders are thrilled by the response to their new movie "courageous."

It was one of the top five highest grossing movies over the weekend, but all the films ahead of it opened on twice as many screens.

So "courageous" was number one on per screen ticket sales.

The Wynnsong Manager said the opening weekend for "Courageous" in Albany was like the openings for Harry Potter, Batman, and Spiderman. Not bad for a movie made in Albany by a bunch of volunteers.

The Wynnsong Cinemas says about 3500 people bought tickets to see "Courageous" over the weekend in Albany. They had the movie in their two largest theatres, but they were sold out all weekend. So movie managers opened two more theatres to handle the audience demand. Producer and writer Stephen Kendrick and his son Grant say the movie's message about fatherhood is hitting home.

Kendrick said " This is what it's all about right here. Helping dads to reach out and love their kids and help set them up to be great dads that home. "

Industry reports show that Courageous was the fourth or fifth biggest grossing movie nationwide, with a weekend total of 8. 8 million dollars. Even though it was shown on only about one thousand screens. To compare, last year "Fireproof" grossed 6.8 million on it's opening weekend, and went on to gross 33 million dollars.

Kendrick said "Courageous got the number one on Fandango and we got an A+ with Cinemascore, which almost never happens with any movie. And so those are really good numbers. And now the box office numbers are really high."

Ken Bevel is one of the volunteer stars in Courageous, and was also in Fireproof. He says it's not about being a star.

Bevel said "Being in the movies is no different than being on the usher ministry or the greeter ministry. We're all doing this to serve the Lord. It's just been a great opportunity to serve with the congregation."

The gross earnings are the best Sherwood Pictures has ever had, and are really good for any Hollywood movie. They are hoping the film will stay in theatres for 4 to 6 weeks."

Now that young man with Stephen Kendrick is his ten year old son Grant. He has a credit in the movie under special effects, because he helped in the editing. Movie making seems to run in the Kendrick genes.

The opening of "Courageous" ranks fifth all-time for a Christian-themed movie,  trailing only "The Passion of the Christ" and the three Narnia movies.
