
ALBANY, GA (WALB) - There are three phases to football. Westover is pretty good in two of them.
The third is special teams and it cost Westover a region game Thursday night.
Worth County returned a blocked field goal 80 yards for a touchdown and also blocked an extra point in a 23-18 win over the Patriots at Hugh Mills Stadium.
The Rams opened the scoring with a 19 yard touchdown pass to Savon Farley to Marlin Hill for a 7-0 lead.
Westover drove down the field led by the running of Deion Greene.
The drive stalled at the Worth County 16 yard line and the Patriots went for a 33 yard field goal.
Dantavis Jones came crashing through and blocked the kick of Ben Fowler.
Hakeem Slade picked up the ball and returned it 80 yards for a Ram touchdown and a 14-0 Worth County lead.
Westover drove back down the field with Shannon Saunders scoring the Patriots first touchdown.
The extra point was blocked making the score 14-6.
Westover quarterback T.J. Wester completed a 20 yard pass to Kenny Towns to convert a third down on the Patriots next drive.
Wester scored on a sneak and the score was Worth County 14-12 after the Patriots failed to convert a two-point try.
Worth County marched down the field in the final 3 minutes of the first half.
On 4th down, Savon Farley completed the pass to Kareem McDaniel for a 17-yard touchdown and 21-12 halftime lead.
Westover scored a touchdown in the second half but the Rams sealed the game with a safety in the final minute.
Both Worth County and Westover are 3-3 and 1-1 in region play.
