Special teams doom Westover

Posted: Updated:

There are three phases to football.  Westover is pretty good in two of them.

The third is special teams and it cost Westover a region game Thursday night.

Worth County returned a blocked field goal 80 yards for a touchdown and also blocked an extra point in a 23-18 win over the Patriots at Hugh Mills Stadium.

The Rams opened the scoring with a 19 yard touchdown pass to Savon  Farley to Marlin Hill for a 7-0 lead.

Westover drove down the field led by the running of Deion Greene.

The drive stalled at the Worth County 16 yard line and the Patriots went for a 33 yard field goal.

Dantavis Jones came crashing through and blocked the kick of Ben Fowler.

Hakeem Slade picked up the ball and returned it 80 yards for a Ram touchdown and a 14-0 Worth County lead.

Westover drove back down the field with Shannon Saunders scoring the Patriots first touchdown.

The extra point was blocked making the score 14-6.

Westover quarterback T.J. Wester completed a 20 yard pass to Kenny Towns to convert a third down on the Patriots next drive.

Wester scored on a sneak and the score was Worth County 14-12 after the Patriots failed to convert a two-point try.

Worth County marched down the field in the final 3 minutes of the first half.

On 4th down, Savon Farley completed the pass to Kareem McDaniel for a 17-yard touchdown and 21-12 halftime lead.

Westover scored a touchdown in the second half but the Rams sealed the game with a safety in the final minute.

Both Worth County and Westover are 3-3 and 1-1 in region play.
