Albany's Georgia State Patrol Post has a new commander;  the first African American woman to lead Post 40.

Sergeant First Class Shawn Urquhart is a 25-year veteran with the Georgia State Patrol.

One of her goals as commander is to have troopers at the post mentor kids at schools and in the community.

"A lot of kids don't see this side of us. Or don't see the light that we have accomplished things in life. So that might be a positive motivational indicator for them to do something positive with their life," said Urquhart.

Sgt. Urquhart will command seven troopers at the Georgia State Patrol post that covers Dougherty, Lee, Baker, and Worth Counties.
