THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) - A south Georgia sheriff's office is working to collect back taxes on hundreds of properties so they don't have to be auctioned.

The Thomas County Sheriff's office took over tax collections in 2008.

Captain Steve Jones says they have more than one million dollars worth of unpaid property taxes just for 2010. "And than in August we're right in the middle of getting ready to put these sales together and we get the mobile home taxes that have not been collected for several years. Back taxes. And I think we estimated close to five hundred thousand."

More than 900 mobile home tax bills are delinquent, some as far back as 2000.

Half of the unpaid 2010 properties will be auctioned off October 4th and the other half on November 1st.
