CAIRO, GA (WALB) - The Cairo Fire Department unveiled a new 9/11 monument Monday morning.

Representatives from the Grady County Sheriff's Office, Cairo Police Department, Grady County EMS, and others paid tribute to the fallen heroes of 9/11.

The new monument consists of scrap metal recovered from the rubble of the World Trade Center. "It's very near and dear to our heart that 343 of our comrades perished in the World Trade Center 10 years ago, yesterday. And to have a piece of history displayed in the city of Cairo is wonderful," said Fire Chief Jim Fielding.

The Cairo High School band performed during the ceremony.
