VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -   Valdosta State got big plays in all three areas to beat Newberry 24-17 Thursday at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.

The Blazers defense scored the first points of the game.

Matt Pierce scooped up a Newberry quarterback Brian Erhlich fumble and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown and 7-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Quin Roberson returned a Newberry punt 81 yards for a VSU special teams score and 14-0 lead.

Newberry got two touchdown passes from their quarterback to tie the game.

That is when the VSU offense did their part.

Austen Roberts threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Roberson to put VSU back in front.

The two teams both scored field goals before VSU's Chris Pope sealed the Blazer win with an interception inside the Blazer five-yard line with under 1:00 to play.

VSU is 2-0 and at Albany State on September 17.
