VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Valdosta City Councilman Sonny Vickers was appointed interim Valdosta Mayor by the Valdosta City Council meeting Thursday evening.

Vickers fills the unexpired term of the embattled Mayor John Fretti who resigned last week.

Vickers becomes the 1st Black Mayor in Valdosta history.

Fretti pled guilty to one count of making false statements and will spend 3-years on probation.

He was also fined one thousand dollars and ordered to pay 42-hundred dollars in restitution to the city.

Fretti was reimbursed by the city and the state for the same travel expenses for a year when he served on the state Department of Community Affairs board.

The vote to appoint Vickers as interim Mayor was unanimous.

Hoke Hampton was appointed to fill Vickers City Council District 3 seat.
