VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Former Valdosta Mayor John Fretti was sentenced to three years probation Wednesday morning for making false statements, after double billing for trip expenses while he attended municipal meetings.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of $1000, and pay restitution to the city for $4,194 that he was improperly re-imbursed, and a $50 crime lab fee.

He resigned as mayor last week.  Mayor Pro tem Alvin Payton will take over the office until the city council appoints an interim mayor at their next meeting Thursday.

Fretti has a right to appeal.
