You can now protect yourself against the flu for the coming flu season.

The Southwest Health District's 14 county health departments started offering seasonal flu vaccines today.

The flu shots do not contain live viruses and are approved for people ages 6 months and older.

The nasal spray vaccine does contain live weakened viruses and is only approved for healthy people ages 2 through 49.

At $25 per dose, public health officials says it is worth the price.

"Decreases the probability of you getting infected with the influenza virus and of course it you are infected with the virus, that means time away from work, aches and pains, and high medical costs to get the flu treated," says Suzette Profit, Immunization Coordinator.

People with egg allergies should check with their doctors before getting vaccinated.
