Authorities have identified the man killed by Police Monday in his Moultrie home as Walter Peterson.
The GBI says Peterson was attempting to stab a police officer when they fired a taser at him.
The GBI says the taser failed to stop Peterson and an officer shot and killed him.
It all began with a disagreement between Peterson and a store clerk at a nearby store.
Authorities say Peterson broke a storefront window and left.
They say when police went to Peterson's home in 100 block of 7th in Moultrie, he pulled a butcher knife.
The GBI tells us officers retreated, called in a SWAT team, and a two hour stand off began.
The GBI says officers attempted to get a cell phone to Peterson for communications.
They say the officers were just inside the back door of the home.
That's when they say Peterson came at Police with a butcher knife with a six to eight inch blade.
The GBI says a taser was fired at Peterson, but he kept coming at Police with the knife.
Five shots were fired by one police officer and Peterson was killed.
One officer sustained a head injury.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation.
The names of the Police officers involved have not been released.
