Blazers need overtime to settle things with Wingate

The VSU football season got off to a dramatic start as the Blazers downed Wingate 34-28 in 2 overtimes to move to 1-0 on the year.  Austen Roberts scored on a QB keeper after the Blazer defense got a hand on a Wingate field goal ending the previous possession.  Much of the talk leading up to the game was the VSU quarterback position and it was Austen Roberts answering the bell passing for 180 yards and 2 scores.

Running back Theseus Jackson ran for 122 yards on 16 carries and 1 touchdown.  Quin Roberson led all receivers with 4 catches for 85 yards and 1 touchdown.   Four Valdosta State players recorded double digit tackles, led by Harrison Dreiling and Chris Pope with 12 each. Ryan Smith and Jeremy Grable had 10 each.

VSU now has a quick turn around and will host Newberry in its season opener at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium on Thursday. Kickoff is 7:00 p.m. in Valdosta.
