Mayor spends last day on the job

A south Georgia mayor spent his last day on the job.

Mayor John Fretti officially stepped down Friday after pleading guilty to a criminal charge last week.

Fretti was about to wrap up his second term as mayor.

A week ago he entered a guilty plea in Lowndes County Superior Court to one count of making false statements.

He also agreed to pay back $4,200 to the city.

Prosecutors say Fretti got travel reimbursements from the city and state for the same trips.

He announced Tuesday he would resign, saying that's in the best interest of the city he loves.

Mayor Pro Tem Alvin Payton will take over the office until the city council appoints an interim mayor at their next meeting on Thursday.
