VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

As qualifying continues for Georgia municipal elections, so far, two men have signed up to run for mayor in Valdosta.

John Gayle and Gary Minchew hope to succeed Mayor John Fretti who's not running again.

Fretti pleaded guilty to giving false statements after he was accused of being reimbursed by the city and the state for the same travel expenses. Gayle and Minchew both say they have the leadership skills for the job.

"It's very important if the city and county don't get along then it costs all of taxpayers money in most cases," said John Gayle.

"My campaign theme is jobs, jobs, jobs. I think that's what's going on right now, common sense government," said Gary Minchew.

Along with the mayor's seat, some city council seats up for election.

There will also be two referenda on the ballot for Sunday alcohol sales and consolidation of Lowndes and Valdosta City schools.
