When you think about ABA basketball the name that usually comes to mind is Dr. J or Julius Erving of course. That was back in the 60's and 70's but the ABA has since been re-established and Albany will now be the home for one of its teams.
The Columbus Riverballers who have been up north for the past 3 years is making the move to the "Good Life City" for its 2011-2012 season. The team held tryouts Saturday at the Turner gym to fill its roster. The team will begin its season this November and is looking for some size in the middle.
In addition, the Columbus Lady Ballers, a first year women's team, was also in Albany Saturday recruiting for its Columbus team. Both coaches say it's a joy to be in Albany area with all the talent around Southwest Georgia.
Riverballers head coach Alton Hicks said "We had 8 guys that left and went overseas from our team so we're here to rebuild. We feel Albany, Cairo, Fitzgerald has talent down here so we just feel like this is a good opportunity for us and also the Columbus Riverballers."
The teams hope to hold another tryout next week. You must be at least 20 years old to play. For more information contact coach Hicks at (706) 562-3844 or you can email him at columbusriverballers @yahoo.com.
