VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -
Valdosta's Mayor surrendered at the Lowndes County Jail Friday afternoon on a charge of making a false statement and was released on his own recognizance.
Mayor John Fretti waived his right to a grand jury indictment and a jury trial.
He entered a guilty plea this morning and agreed to reimburse the city for nearly $4,200.
Valdosta businessman Roy Taylor accused Fretti of getting reimbursed by the city and the state for the same travel expenses.
The Valdosta city ethics board cleared him of any code of conduct violations.
Taylor's attorney is disappointed.
"What is to me disappointing is that 11 days after denying he had breached those statutes he pled guilty to false statement by public official this morning," said Jay Smith, Roy Taylor's attorney.
The mayor would not talk to us about the case Friday.
