Argument escalates, SWAT responds

A SWAT team was called to a Lowndes County home after an argument between a man and his girlfriend escalated.

Police say the man pointed a gun at the woman Monday night. Officers were especially concerned because there were children in the home. They even evacuated several neighbors as a precaution.

Inside a Wiregrass Estates mobile home is where investigators say Lemuel Williams pointed a handgun at his live-in girlfriend Juanita Hogen and told her he was going to end her life. Investigators say Williams had been drinking.

The two had been arguing.

Hogan and one of four children inside escaped to a neighbor's house and called 9-1-1. Lowndes County used its special response team.

"The first one I saw had a gun drawn and that scared me pretty bad because I didn't know what was going on," said neighbor Betty Walker.

Walker heard officers order Williams out of the house.

"I heard the police say to come out this is the sheriff's department," said Walker.

She and some other neighbors had to evacuate.

"We evacuated several of the residences around that home just to assure those people's safety," said Lowndes County Lt. Stryde Jones.

The special response team was called out because there were children inside the house and the man was armed.

Three children were sleeping in the living room. The team was able to walk in the unlocked back door rescue the kids and later arrest Williams who was in a bedroom.

Meanwhile Betty Walker waited down the street until she could get back to her own home after about two hours she says.

"I saw 25 or more police cars come in here after I got to the end of the road," said Walker.

A domestic dispute that could've ended terribly ended without anyone getting hurt.

46 year old Lemuel Williams is charged with terroristic threats, four counts of cruelty to a child, pointing a handgun at another, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime
