Albany Tech starts new semester system

Students returned to Albany Tech's campus Monday, studying under a new academic calendar.

Monday marked the first day of fall semester classes.

It's the first time the technical college system has operated under a semester rather than quarter system.

Faculty members say it will be better for students.

"We're going from a 10 week quarter to a 15 week semester. We have so much more time for the students to see their progress at an eight week midterm and we talk with them at the midterm and go on to finish the program or course in 15 weeks," said Fire Science Technology Chairman Don Laye.

Officials say as of Monday morning, fall enrollment is about 4,200 students.

That's down from almost 4,500 last fall.
