Valdosta man wins a mega $250,000!

News release from the Georgia Lottery Corp.

A Valdosta man has collected a quarter-million-dollar Georgia Lottery prize. James Peterson, 55, won $250,000 by matching the first five winning numbers in the July 29 Mega Millions drawing.

Peterson claimed his prize Monday at the Georgia Lottery's Tifton office.

"I told the ladies there that they need to be trained in CPR because I almost had a heart attack," he laughed. "I'm sort of numb at the moment."

A father of four, Peterson said he was laid off six months ago after budget cuts at the hospital where he worked.

"It's coming at a wonderful time," he said of his win.

Quick Change #0060, located at 18374 Valdosta Highway in Valdosta, sold the lucky ticket.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $12.7 billion to the state of Georgia for education.

All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia's Pre-K Program.

More than 1.3 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.1 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
