Sherwood Elementary students know what's on the menu.

That's because teachers and administrators in Dougherty county promote the importance of school nutrition. They're taught getting the right nourishment in the morning is important.

Sure students have their favorites .But kids at Sherwood Magnet are literally cheering for breakfast.

Poems and music are how students celebrated their Big Breakfast Bash.

"S. W. A. G. stands for Students with academic greatness." said Eddie Johnson, Sherwood Principal.

Swag is a motto the school adopted to help students reach their full potential. "We need swag to be able to reach our goals in reading, math, and language."

They're learning every bite counts, especially the first one.

"If they get to choose what they eat, that will help them be more successful in the classroom," said Johnson.

"These kids are very lucky because every school doesn't have a program like this," said Audrey Rowe, who works for the USDA, and came down to see what was on the menu.

"The healthy servings they have for breakfast is exactly what we've been talking about nationally," she said.

Data shows that kids perform better at school after having a well balanced meal. "If you talk to teachers around 10:30 students, who don't have breakfast start to drift away."

Who knew apples and oranges and could go such a long way?

Sherwood Elementary is taking nutrition one step further applying for the Healthier Us School Challenge. And once accepted, they can receive more funding from the USDA.
