Thomas Co. forming new voting districts

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) - Like their counterparts across Georgia, Thomas County leaders are getting to work drawing new voting district lines.

The new districts must be based on new census numbers. Each district in the county should have close to 5,600 residents.

There were some pretty substantial population shifts in Thomas County. "District Eight, which is my district, we took in 15 percent of the population. Well District Seven lost 15 percent," said Commission Chairman Elaine Mays.

Once commissioners agree on district lines, they'll seen their plan to the state reapportionment office. Redistricting plans must be approved by the Justice Department.
