A black bear was spotted crossing a Homerville highway Sunday night and sadly had to be put down.

Homerville Police Chief Mark Register says a motorist spotted the bear crossing Highway 441 near Harvey's around 9:30.

The female bear was in bad shape.

She weighed just 80 pounds and appeared to have been hit by a vehicle.

DNR rangers had tagged the bear in 1996.

They say wildfires may have pushed her out of her habitat.
