THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) - Downtown Main Street in Thomasville is now an accredited National Main Street Program.
The National Trust gives its stamp of approval to Main Street Programs that strengthen their local economy and protect historic buildings.
Thomasville's program began in 1981. Since then, the district has seen a net gain of 249 businesses and 831 jobs.
More than $63 million has been reinvested into the downtown area. "I have enjoyed walking on it. There have been several signs that I have seen that reminded me of things that I used to see as a child on main street. Not necessarily in Thomasville, but just good memories. It is a great main street. Definitely is. It's well named," said Downtown Visitor Carol Norris.
In 1998, the city was awarded the Great American Main Street Award.
