VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Entering his second season at Valdosta, Wildcats head coach Rance Gillespie has a big rebuilding job on his hands.
The Wildcats lost 14 starters from last year's team including their two top playmakers in Jay Rome and Malcolm Mitchell.
Coach Gillespie believes reloading the defense will be somewhat easier since most of the new starters got plenty of playing time in reserved roles last year.
Another reason is the Cats return defensive lineman Mike Wakefield.
The offense is a different story.
Coach Gillespie says he will pick a starting quarterback during August practice from four candidates.
The big concern is who will be the playmakers on offense since the Cats not only lost their top receivers but all of their skill position players from last year.
Rance Gillespie said. "We think we have got a couple of guys that can provide the pop for us. It is just the matter of giving the reps. Getting them some experience and then we have got to get them in some game experience."
Valdosta opens the season in three weeks against Brooks County.
