New Dougherty County voting lines are a step closer to being approved.

County Commissioners unanimously approved the redistricting plan today based on population numbers from last year's census.

The school board will review it next week.

"When the 2010 census came in there was no doubt we had to redistrict because 2 of the districts had more people in those districts than the law allows and 4 districts had fewer number of people that the law allows. There had to be a shifting of the population," said County Attorney Spencer Lee.

Statewide redistricting will be a more difficult process.

A General Assembly special session is set to begin August 15th to come up with new Congressional districts and state house and senate lines.
