Peak seasons for West Nile Virus approaching

West Nile virus hasn't been a problem in our area this year... But health officials say we shouldn't let our guard down.

August is normally the peak season for West Nile cases. The virus is spread through mosquito bites.

The health department says you need to protect yourself.

"Do not go outside for any activities around dusk or dawn, and if you must always use insect repellents", says district environmental health director Dewayne Tanner.

You should also drain standing water on your property and repair torn screens to keep mosquitoes out of your home.
