Medical arts program expands in certain magnet schools

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Dougherty County school system hopes to start preparing students at an early age for medical careers.

The Academy of Medical Arts will start at Lake Park Elementary and continue through Merry Acres Middle and Westover High School.

Students will learn from doctors and nurses. They must pass certain requirements and maintain a rigorous class load.

The principal at merry acres says this program will set Dougherty county apart.

"We want to tell kids they can become what ever they want to become," said Merry Acres Principal, Dr. Ufot Inyang. " It's a reality for them because of programs like this."

So far more than 200 students are in the program. They can also earn high school and college credits. The principal hopes to expand it each year.
