Sunday Blombergh's murderer sentenced to life in prison

Just as the prosecution was gearing up for trial in Tift County, a man accused of killing his step daughter in law made a surprise move. Herman Evans plead guilty to Sunday Blombergh's murder.

Last April, family members, friends and officers from multiple agencies launched a massive search for 28-year old Sunday Blombergh, a young mother who had mysteriously disappeared. "During most of the investigation we didn't know if she was alive or dead, we were just trying to find her," said Assistant Special Agent in Charge Mark Pro.

But In May, that missing person search took a tragic turn. "The more evidence that we located and found we knew that there was a strong possibility we were not going to find her alive," said Pro.

Just weeks after she disappeared Randy Tomlinson, Herman Evan's best friend, led investigators to Blombergh's body in a field not far from the Tift Colquitt County line. "We think Herman was responsible for actually shooting Sunday at their home in Tift county and he and Randy Tomlinson had taken her from that location to a point where we found her,"said Pro.

Tresa Crist lived next door to the home Herman and Ruby were living in, "You wake up one day and you think did this really happen next door," she said.

Altogether, four people including Blombergh's husband and her mother in law were charged in her murder. However, as agents were gearing up for Herman's trial in August, Evans made a shocking move and plead guilty to murder. "He's been pretty strong all the way, so I figured he would go into the trial and take his chances in court..so yes I'm very satisfied and happy that he did the right thing and took responsibility for his action," said Pro.

GBI agents say this case was tedious and exhausting, and its nice the family finally has a little closure. "I'm glad his conscious led him that way and under that consideration I hope the family can rest a little bit but they are still always going to have their daughter and granddaughter missing," said Crist.

GBI agents are hoping Herman's move encourages the remaining three defendants to enter a plea. "With my experience, I would think it would enhance their desires to go ahead and get their cases taken care of," said Pro.

Evans will be eligible for parole after 30 years.

Pro says he wants to thank all of the individuals, businesses and law enforcement officers who helped with Sunday's search.
