MACON GA (WALB) - After more than 70 years, Mercer University is bringing back football.
The Bears will return to the gridiron in the fall of 2013.
Mercer has hired former Furman University coach Bobby Lamb to re-start their football program.
Lamb says the Mercer alumni and student body are already excited about the return of football.
But there is plenty of work to do before the first game is played in two years.
Mercer is one of many division one schools that is bringing back or starting football and coach Lamb has gotten advice from coaches like Bill Curry at Georgia State and Joey Jones at South Alabama.
Bobby Lamb said. "There is a lot of people that have started this deal and everyone of them will tell you they have made mistakes along the way. I think we are going to make some mistakes but it is all part of the experience. You can never get everything exactly right. If you just try to minimize mistakes and make the best decision possible for your university at the time."
Mercer will play in the Pioneer Football League for football only and will start practice in the fall of 2012.
