More than 20-years after it was approved, a safety project along a busy Albany road is finally finished.

The project was approved as part of the sales tax that went into effect in 1990, but the city and county never followed through.

The city engineering department got it going again last year and paid Water Gas and Light roughly $200,000 to install 45 lights between Gillionville road and Meredith drive.

The light pole bases are designed to break away if a car hits them. The 400 watt bulbs are set on a timer.

WG&L used a directional drill instead of a back hoe to protect trees in the median.

Georgia Power will be in charge of installing lights the rest of the way up Westover to Old Dawson Road.
