Cops bust gambling operation

MOULTRIE, GA (WALB) -

Nine people were arrested late yesterday when police raided an internet café store in Moultrie.

"We did some background investigations on it and surveillance as well as undercover operations. We established, what we thought, was an illegal gambling operation. We obtained and served search warrants yesterday on the Fourth of July," said Detective Stephen Stratman.

Cops collected gambling machines and 1000 dollars worth of cash.

Neighboring business complained about the traffic picking up in the parking lot of the shopping center, which ultimately led to the investigation of the café.

"The lady next door mentioned to me that she couldn't take care of her customers because the traffic was getting to the point that there was no place to park," said store owner Chuck Jennings.

Some café visitors were convinced the business was legitimate.

"They said they had license and everything. The place was full every night," said café user Willie Ingram.

And others weren't.

"They said it was legal but I don't know. I never went in there because I didn't want to get caught up in there," said Shirley Sanders.

Detective Stratman hopes this bust will make other owners of internet cafes think twice before they decided to operate illegal gambling operations.
