Drowning victim Jakob Peters is laid to rest today

Posted: Updated:

A day that Jakob Peters family were afraid would never come, the community joined forces to finally give a proper funeral for the little boy. Through donations and the sheer good will of others the thousands of dollars needed to fund Jakob's laying to rest disappeared.

Although this is known as a day of mourning you can see family and friends have gathered to celebrate Jakob's life.

And being the free spirit he was his family knew he would enjoy everyone being her today

His aunt Deborah Peters says Jakob would be proud.

"He would be overwhelmed he would probably be like oh everyone is here for me he would probably want to sing and give everybody hugs and thank everyone for being here cause we already look at him as a star anyways"

But its important to the family that his memory lives on

"I know that JJ he's gonna be missed but he is not going to be forgotten"

And his memory encourages other to make a stand in the community and build a recreation center for the youth in Dawson.

"We are trying to prevent this from happening again by setting up a memorial fund in the name of Jakob peters so the community can get on board as well as the governments" says Reverend Holley of the NAACP.

Commissioner Johnson says "Just like we came together to make sure this burial was good for Jakob we need to in his name pull the community together to get some type of positive recreation inside of Dawson".

All donations can be dropped of at the Bank of Terrell County or Dawson Bank.
