Lanier Co. Sheriff's Office is up and running again

Posted: Updated:

A new budget year means a south Georgia sheriff's office that essentially shut down last month is running again.

Lanier County Sheriff Nick Norton furloughed most employees and parked his patrol cars. Officers only responded to calls where people were in peril.

He says county commissioners did not give him enough money to run the sheriff's office. Commissioners claim Norton overspent.

They filed a lawsuit to force him to stick to a budget matching the money they allocated for his office. That law suit was dismissed.

Thursday night, the commission was supposed to adopt a new county budget for the fiscal year that started Friday, but they did not have a quorum.
