20-year old Bruce Mullen was an Albany State University student from Macon.

He was standing in a breezeway at Hidden Oaks when he was shot and killed.

Prosecutors say there were a lot of people outside at Hidden Oaks Apartment just after midnight when Mullen was killed.

They want witnesses to come forward.

This is the 7th murder so far in Albany this year. Detectives have been interviewing who they call persons of interest and witnesses today, but say they have no suspects at this time. Neighbors tell us gunshots at night are pretty commonplace in this apartment complex.

Police say 20 year old Bruce Mullen was found lying in the breezeway just outside his apartment, number 194, at the Hidden Oaks Apartments on Mock Road. He had been shot at least once in the chest.  Mullen was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

District Attorney Greg Edwards said "There may have been some kind of drug transaction going on, but that is something that again is part of what the investigation is trying to discover."

We talked with Mullen's neighbors, who heard gunshots just after midnight. One said she heard five gunshots, one said she heard two. They were afraid to have their faces shown, but all the neighbors we talked to said gunfire was common place in that neighborhood at night.

A neighbor who did want to be identified said "It happens out here all the time. Sometimes they are out here at night just shooting, for no reason, shooting in the air."

One neighbor told me Mullen told her recently that he was afraid someone was trying to rob him.

Investigators are questioning persons of interest, and say they are also searching for others.

Edwards said "There were persons present inside of the household but they did not particularly or were not part of what happened."

Albany State President Dr. Everette Freeman said in a statement ""Today is a sad day for Albany State University as we mourn the death of a student whose life ended tragically far too soon. Under the circumstances, we will place our Counseling Service at the disposal of any ASU students who may need support in the days ahead."

Prosecutors would not say if Mullen had a gun himself when he was shot, saying that was part of the ongoing investigation.

Mullen was a junior at Albany State, but was not enrolled in classes this semester.

Bruce Mullen is the son of well known high school football coach Bruce Mullen from Northeast High School in Macon.
