Pet owners are advised to keep animals at home 4th of July

Posted: Updated:

More dogs and cats go missing on July 4th than any other day of the year.

The loud explosions of fireworks cause anxiety in pets and lead many of them to panic and bolt.

Maria Burley runs the lost pets website "Peanuts Friends". She says you should put your animals inside around sunset and let them hang out in a dark room with places to hide.

"Fireworks start going off an animal doesn't understand it so its definitely scary to them and what they do a blind dash and may even go through fences even if you have them on leash".

She says you probably shouldn't bring your dog to a fireworks show. But if you do make sure they're on a good leash and can't get away.
