THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) - A nursing student at Southwest Georgia Tech is now a national champion and gold medal winner. Nicole Harper was awarded the gold medal for Skills U-S-A in the Nurse Assisting Category.

This category included tests like checking vital signs, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and oral care. More than 15,000 people participated in the event.

Harper says at times the competition was more intense than an actual hospital. "At a hospital you would call on another nurse to come help you or another assistant to come help you, but there you're just on your own, relying on your skills that you've learned and you're set on a time limit. At a hospital you'll probably have more leaning of time."

School officials believe this victory could greatly impact admissions. Harper says after winning this competition, her clinicals will be a breeze.
