12-year old Ethan Appleton is playing soccer at the Albany YMCA's first ever Camp KWD(Kids with Diabetes).
"My parents they had decided to let me come because I only found out that I have type 1 diabetes 4 months ago and I didn't know anyone else that had it so they decided to send me here to meet some other kids with type one"
Phoebe Putney's Diabetes care center is helping put on the camp for kids like Ethan who have type 1 or 2 diabetes or those at risk to the disease.
Through interactive learning and fun, the camp teaches lifestyle changes like weight management, diet choices and different medical equipment to help them every day.
The campers are monitored closely and their sugar levels are kept under watch attention that many camps don't have the ability to provide.
But most important the camp's goal is to establish high self esteem in the campers and allow them to interact with kids dealing with the same challenges they face.
