About 80 Dougherty County youngsters will get to witness the final shuttle launch at the Kennedy Space Center on July 9th.

60-members of the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office CHAMPS Summer Camp program and 20-kids with the mentoring group from the Omega Men of Excellence will travel to Florida for the launch.

The trip is thanks to Albany State University's NASA Summer of Innovation program.

The camp is already holding science classes to teach them about the space program.

Dougherty County Sheriff's Office Lt. Terron Hayes said  "It's an opportunity of a lifetime. It's a chance of a lifetime. It's really exciting to a lot of them."

The qualified summer campers at the CHAMPS program held a lottery this afternoon to decide which campers would get to go to the launch.

About one third of the campers will make the trip.
