There are more Albany Police officers on the streets these days.

Recognizing the department was top heavy, Chief John Proctor says 11 Sergeant and Lieutenant positions were either eliminated or shifted to new street officer positions. Even so, the department still has a 20 officer deficit.

"With those cuts I reallocated those positions to line level positions so that they can go out on the road and actually respond to calls for service, we didn't need that many supervisors,"  Proctor says.

Chief Proctor says he's still recruiting officers. He says more would have already been hired, but as many as five could not complete the requirements to become a sworn officer.
